Title: From Shortage to Setback: How Undermining Teacher Certification Threatens Science Education
Abstract:
The shortage of qualified science teachers in Nebraska and across the nation has intensified, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to increased retirements and attrition. While researchers and national organizations like the National Science Foundation and American Chemical Society emphasize strong disciplinary preparation for science teachers, some education policymakers have advocated for reduced qualifications despite evidence that such tactics undermine instructional quality. Research shows that underprepared teachers are more likely to leave the profession, less likely to engage in effective inquiry-based teaching, and lead to lower educational outcomes for students. Nebraska’s recent policy decision to allow emergency certification for science degree holders, risks perpetuating a cycle of teacher turnover, and providing lower-quality education for students. A more sustainable solution requires strengthened collaboration between universities, science and education faculty, and school partners to ensure that well-prepared, highly qualified science teachers are supported and retained.
