Students in the Department of Communication Studies have many opportunities to get involved, connect, and hone their skills.

Research
Serving as a research assistant is a great way to prepare for graduate school. Earn course credit by serving as a research assistant through COMM 397. Research assistant opportunities are secured at the invitation of a faculty member who sees a good fit between a current undergraduate student who has demonstrated excellence in the classroom and an ongoing research project.

Leadership
The Communication Studies Undergraduate Student Advisory Board (CSUGSAB) is a great opportunity to get involved in the Department of Communication Studies, connect with faculty, graduate students, as well as campus partners. As a member of the board, you will represent the student voice in the department. Participation in CSUGSAB helps you translate what you are learning in the classroom to the broader community.

Internship
Work with a College of Arts and Sciences Career Coach to prepare and apply for an internship. Register for COMM 395 and earn credit toward the Communication Studies major while gaining professional experience at an internship related to your studies.

Student Spotlight:
Ian Maltas a Psychology and Communication Studies double major shared why he chose Communication Studies and how it has impacted him:

“By choosing a Communication Studies major, I have felt more challenged to take new perspectives when approaching problems I come across, which has been extremely useful when tackling projects in all of my classes. It’s a major where students will learn invaluable concepts that are not only useful in a professional setting, but are also helpful in developing a greater sense of self. It helps me better understand myself in the context of my relationships and the dynamic roles I can fulfill in any situation. I chose this as my second major because I want to become a therapist after attending graduate school, and I felt that having a deep and diverse understanding of communication would be the most important skill I could bring with me in that setting.”
