Interested in a Microbiology Major? Explore the Microbiology Research Symposium

Microbiology, the study of organisms invisible to the naked eye with a B1G Impact! You are invited to explore the field of microbiology at our first annual Microbiology Research Symposium on November 12 in the Beadle Center Auditorium from 3-5pm. Here you can explore this interdisciplinary field and major through research presented by students and faculty in CAS and CASNR here at the UNL. Register to attend at microbiology.unl.edu. Pre-registration is encouraged by November 8, 2021.

Yes, microorganisms can make you sick and cause global challenges such as the current pandemic. However, most microorganisms on Earth are beneficial and are often used to develop novel biotechnological applications. This might be associated with health and food (probiotics in yogurt), bioenergy production (electricity, natural gas, and ethanol), waste treatment (water treatment plants and bioremediation), agriculture (plant and animal associate microbiota), and antibiotic production. The Microbiology major at the UNL capitalizes on the interdisciplinary nature of the field with classes offered through two colleges and numerous departments to ensure a diverse prospective of an important field that impacts all of us daily. You are half microbe after all! Courses are offered where you can focus on an area of your interest such as health or an applied area of microbiology.

Students graduating from our major have entered professional programs such as medical and dental school, graduate school, as well as directly entered the workforce serving as a bioprocess engineer, wine process technologist, laboratory technician, biomedical technician, and research scientist. We welcome you to our program.
