If you are undecided on a major but clear about your desire to take interesting classes that encourage you to think critically, help you to grow personally, and prepare you to succeed in whatever career you choose, consider majoring in Communication Studies! Our majors learn how to relate, advocate for a cause, and negotiate difference in their personal and professional lives. They learn how to formulate arguments, navigate conflict, communicate ethically and inclusively, work effectively in team environments, and listen effectively. They develop storytelling skills, media literacy, and how to better navigate digital communication. Our graduates are working in a wide range of careers, to include business, management, sales, banking and finance, government and non-profit, hospitality, sports and fitness, healthcare, and education.

You can choose to major in Communication Studies generally, or, if you prefer a more directed path through the major coursework that is more targeted to your interests, you can choose to select one of three emphasis areas. Our Health and Well-Being Emphasis Area includes coursework that focuses on the role of communication in understanding and explaining individual and relational health, promoting healthy behaviors, and helping persons navigate challenges. Our Public Advocacy and Civic Engagement Emphasis Area includes coursework that focuses on the role of communication in facilitating public participation, mediating public controversies, and organizing for social change and civic involvement. Our Diversity, Culture, and Global Communication Emphasis Area includes coursework that focuses on the role of communication in constructing identity in a diverse world.
