Q: How has the industry changed since you first started, and how is our program preparing students for where it’s going?
A: Since I first started my career, sustainability has gained traction as a priority in both public and private spheres. Because human well-being is inseparable from the health of natural systems, there will always be a need for individuals who can understand and navigate these relationships.
Q: You’re known for prioritizing 'hands-on' learning. Can you describe a specific class where students get to apply theory to the real world?
A: Thanks! Environmental & Sustainability Studies is certainly distinct in its interdisciplinary focus. We see value in integrating science with other disciplines like environmental ethics, history, literature, geography, and cultural studies. Our students are also driven by purpose and a need to contribute sustainable solutions to real-world problems. This doesn’t always happen in an Ivory Tower. Students need opportunities to learn how to make a difference. For example, in our Psychology of Environmental Sustainability course (ENVR 334) we utilize community-based social marketing as an approach for creating sustainable behavior change on campus. With this project, students create implementation plans for different goals in UNL’s Sustainability Master Plan. The plans are then presented and disseminated to our Office of Sustainability for consideration.
Q: What is one thing about the 'vibe' or community within the environmental and sustainability studies program that a student won't find in a brochure?
A: ESS students are changemakers at every level. EVERY student in this program understands sustainability in all of its different forms, as well as how to utilize systems thinking, find points of leverage, and make real, impactful changes no matter where they go. Low key: It’s our super-power.
Q: If you had to give a prospective student one 'mini-challenge' or something to read/watch right now to see if they’d love this field, what would it be?
A: I would encourage prospective students to draw a timeline of significant events, experiences, and people who were formative in their lives. Think deeply about what motivates you and conjures up strong feelings or a willingness to take action. If any of these things are related to understanding, caring about, or identifying with the environment in some way, we would love for you to join us to see what Environmental & Sustainability Studies is all about!
