It’s a Great Time to Be an Oil and Gas Geologist
On Wednesday, December 15 at 12 pm, the AAPG Academy will host "It’s a Great Time to Be an Oil and Gas Geologist" via Zoom. Click Here to Register!
History shows we are in an energy transition and have been since Drake’s well. Oil and Gas are part of a continuum to better, more dense forms of energy from coal, dung, and whale oil. Despite headlines, there will a strong demand for geoscience professionals in oil and gas for the next 50 years. Green energy requires massive amounts of minerals and resources to sustain power generation, and brings with it an enormous environmental footprint – these ‘externalities’ are only now being articulated by a few.
Hydrocarbons, especially natural gas, will be a dominant part of the energy mix, either as methane or as blue hydrogen, until the nation transitions to nuclear power. Geologists will continue to play a key role in oil and gas exploration, exploitation, and production teams. The hydrocarbon industry is a cyclic business. Another boom is on the way. Ignore history at your peril.
