Hello Geology Majors,
I hope this message findings you happy, healthy, and well. As the semester continues to wind down, I want to continue to point out some things that I think you should spend some of your limited time on before the semester ends. However, I also want to point out something that you might not be able to really do until next semester.
Participating in student organizations where they are academic, professional, or social is a great way to gain experience working with groups of people and organizing events. You can also get some leadership experience by serving as an officer of a student organization. Have you been participating in a student organization this year? If yes, have you considered a leadership role within the organization? If not, have you looked into student organizations that might interest you?
Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement maintains a system called NvolveU that is a way to find student organizations affiliated with UNL that meet your interests. Students of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is a registered student organization that you can find information about in NvolveU. There are more than 500 registered student organizations available on campus, and I would strongly encourage you to get involved in something. I would also encourage you to pursue a leadership position in a student organization during your time as a student.
Did you miss priority registration for the Fall 2022 semester which wrapped up last week? There is still plenty of time to enroll in classes for the upcoming summer and fall semesters, and I would urge you to spend some time planning out your courses. I am still available for both meetings and drop-in advising to help you with that planning, so please do not hesitate to see me for a meeting.
Do you have hold on your MyRed account that is blocking your ability to enroll in classes for the summer and/or fall semesters? Now is the time to get to work on getting this hold or holds removed from your record, and I would be glad to help with doing so in any way that I can. However, I normally cannot help with a hold unless you meet with me, but I would be happy to help with any questions that you have outside of a meeting.
Have you given any thought to what your plans are for the summer semester outside of classes? Summer semesters or breaks are a great time to gain practical experience. Practical experience can take on a number of different forms, and you would be surprised at what you can learn from a part time job. I would be happy to help you work on some plans for your summer semester or break if you are having trouble working out what you want to do or can do.
Best wishes, Doug

CAPS Undergraduate BIPOC Therapy Group Available
Counseling and Psychological Services has a Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Therapy group that currently meets on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm on Zoom. This group is designed for undergraduate students of color to offer and receive support from peers as they develop self-awareness and insight on issues such as academics, imposter syndrome, micro-aggressions, isolation, loneliness, adjustment to college, and more. Since this is classified as a therapy group, each group member needs to be an official patient at CAPS, which consists of having an open file and having completed an Initial Evaluation appointment. At the initial evaluation appointment, students can share with the clinician that they are interested in the Undergrad BIPOC group, and the clinician can connect interested students with therapy group facilitators, Falesa and Derrick. The CAPS phone number is 402-472-7450.
