GEOL 491: Computational Methods for Modeling Earth Systems for Fall 2022!
Hi Geology Majors,
As you plan your course enrollments for Fall 2022, we invite you to consider enrolling in a new 3-credit course in geochemical modeling! Dr. Haacker and Dr. Elkins will be co-teaching a new 400/800 level class, Computational Methods for Modeling Earth Systems, which will explore practical methods in Python for studying systems in geology and hydrology.
In the class, we will survey a variety of different types of models and methods (from data analysis and visualization to forward modeling and numerical techniques), and students will then have a chance to write their own Python code for a class project.
As it is being offered for the first time, the class has temporary course numbers for the coming fall term (either GEOL 491 or GEOS 898-011). We plan to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45 pm in BESY 214 (the computer lab). Prerequisites are GEOL 200 (Mineralogy) and MATH 107, or equivalent classes taught elsewhere. If you would like to enroll and need a permission code to confirm, please just ask. We hope to see you there in the fall!
