First Five Nebraska (FFN) is a statewide early childhood policy and communications organization that offers the opportunity for graduate students to work in an innovative, future-focused, and growing area of public policy as a paid graduate intern.

FFN works with multiple early childhood stakeholders including policy makers, government agencies, higher education, and private sector partners on public policies that ensure our youngest children have high-quality early learning opportunities during the crucial first five years of life. FFN’s staff are experts in public policy with a combined experience in government relations, data analysis and strategic communications.

Internship Description
As an intern, you will be a valued member of our team as you gain work experience in the academic field you are pursuing as well as contributing substantively to our work whether you choose a policy, communications, or research track. The academic domain is not as critical as a qualifier for this internship as is a true interest in pursuing policy, policy communications, and/or policy research.

Student learning opportunities may include any or all the following:

  • Analyze federal, state, and local public policies, programs, and legislative issues that impact young children and their families in the areas of early childhood
  • Research and summarize information from other states on early childhood policies and programs to include service delivery systems, governance structures, funding mechanisms, or other topics identified
  • Assist in researching, writing, and developing executive summaries, policy briefs, data analysis, public testimony, and talking points in print, digital, and social media platforms
  • Attend internal and external meetings with governmental and community partners
  • Serve in a primary support role with FFN staff in their assigned work areas (policy, communications, research) to help develop strategies to carry out the assigned project
  • Supervision will be assigned based on each internship, and regular feedback will be offered to enhance students’ learning
  • Support for identifying and preparing for career opportunities after the internship, as well as connections to learning opportunities outside of FFN
Duration
Internships will last the duration of a full semester. Two internship positions will be available per semester. Applications for the 2020 Spring semester are due November 1, 2019.
