Each fall, students wonder: "Should I get the flu shot?" The University Health Center is here to answer all your questions.
Does the flu shot work?
Yes! While no vaccine offers 100% immunity, the flu shot is your best defense. Even if you catch the flu, being vaccinated means you'll likely have milder symptoms.
I got the flu shot last year. Do I need it again?
Absolutely. The flu virus changes each year, which is why last year's shot won’t protect you from this year's strains. Plus, your immunity from the previous shot fades over time.
What are the benefits for me?
Did you know 10 to 15% of people who get the flu also develop nasty bronchitis, sinusitis or ear infections? Getting vaccinated means you’re less likely to deal with severe flu symptoms. Do your body a favor and get the shot!
I'm young and healthy, so why should I get the flu shot?
Infants, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems face more significant risks from the flu. By getting vaccinated, you’re protecting yourself and the people around you—friends, family and even your classmates who are at higher risk. Think of it as a way to help your community.
Can I receive the flu shot if I am immunocompromised?
Yes! You can still safely get a flu shot even if you have a condition like HIV, are pregnant or are immunocompromised.
What if the flu shot makes me feel sick?
You won’t get the flu from the shot, but you might feel mild muscle aches or a low fever for a day or two.
What if I can't afford the flu vaccine?
