Description: Position Summary:

This temporary position is an opportunity for industry ‘beginners’ (i.e., broadcasting/journalism students or recent graduates) to get involved in a practical way with the real-world demands of producing an award-winning, groundbreaking public radio news program. The duties outlined below are consistent with providing a meaningful experience for the intern and SCPR.

This is an unpaid internship, with one exception: intern will be paid when audio they collect, or collect and produce, is broadcast on KPCC. This initial term of this position is six months, from January through June, but at their sole discretion, host and producer may offer a six-month extension (July-December) of the internship.

Position Responsibility:

• Some editing, producing, and reporting
• Research and recruit new commentators
• Assist with research of story ideas/segment concepts
• Assist in booking interview guests
• Assist in other show production duties as requested
• Write online content, including blog entries and show segments
• Find and pitch new stories for the show

Required Education and Experience:

• Current college student or recent graduate
• Experience in a journalism environment

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Strong writing, editing, research and communication skills
• Ability to manage several different projects at once
• Ability to manage daily workload efficiently (good time management skills)
• Ability to meet deadlines as assigned
• Ability to pitch original, captivating story ideas
• Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and a basic understanding of HTML
• Familiarity with the fundamentals of broadcasting

Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Interest in a journalism career
• Ability to be a ‘self-starter’
• Familiarity with the values/sound of public radio
• An appreciation for Off-Ramp’s diverse, personal approach to radio journalism
• Some experience working in a broadcast or newsroom environment
• Knowledge of digital editing technologies
• Willing to think outside the box of conventional journalistic style

• Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
• Physical Demands:
o Required to move about in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time
o Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping

o Occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions
