Public Information Officer - Nebraska Lottery

The public information officer, under general supervision, develops and implements public information functions or activities for a the Nebraska Lottery to inform the public, governmental/program officials, and/or State employees of needs and issues and/or of the objectives, policies, and programs of the Lottery; performs related work as assigned.

Examples of Work:
-Assist the PIO with the Nebraska Lottery Events Tour.
-Interview Nebraska Lottery winners and prepare winners stories for posting to the website and for media release.
-Record the daily winning numbers messages.
-Prepare Fast Facts employee e-newsletter on a weekly basis.
-Assist the PIO II and PIO III in preparing news releases, and department publications.
-Assist with social media efforts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Requirements:
-Voc/Tech diploma or Associate Degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field
-One year of experience in planning and conducting public relations/information activities
-Experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.
-basic website skills and social media experience; ability to speak Spanish.
-A valid driver's license, or the ability to provide independent transportation; must be able to travel throughout Nebraska including overnight stays; must be able to work a flexible schedule at Nebraska Lottery tour events which will include some nights and weekends.

Knowledge of:
The principles and practices of journalism; the principles and practices of public relations; the techniques of layout design; the English language including spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, word usage, and grammar; Lottery operations, rules, policies, and objectives; the techniques, formats, and styles of public information dissemination; publication/broadcast deadlines; social media; video production skills. Ability to: Communicate effectively in individual or group settings with Lottery players, Lottery retailers, Lottery staff, event staff and the general public at levels understandable to each audience; conduct interviews with Lottery players; write/edit copy to fit assigned space in a layout; evaluate the public information potential of written, illustrative, and related material for a specific project assignment; assess the impact and effectiveness of specific public information materials or activities in meeting the interests of the public media and the needs of the Lottery'; apply Lottery policies and procedures pertinent to the public information function.
