Nebraska Extension 2023 H.O.P.E. Challenge – June Focus is on STOP THE BLEED® - “Helping Others Prepare for Emergencies”

Stop the Bleed
Stop the Bleed

In less than five minutes, someone can die of blood loss. You might be the first person on the scene of an accident or incident that can help a victim who is at risk of bleeding to death. After calling 9-1-1, you can take steps learned in a STOP THE BLEED® course to apply pressure to a wound, pack a wound and if needed, use a tourniquet.

According to Susan Whitwell, Association of Women Surgeons (2019), people who work with youth often have CPR training but when a child is involved in an accident with a lot of blood loss, it is easy to panic. She shares this training helps people learn how to focus on the needs of the victim and set their own emotions aside so they can take action quickly to save a life.

When Nebraska Extension faculty, staff, and volunteers are trained in lifesaving skills like STOP THE BLEED®, we are better prepared and have the confidence and courage needed to respond when faced with an emergency – at work, home, and in our communities.
