Apple Jack Festival
Nebraska City's annual Apple Jack Festival had a wonderful University flavor to it this year! The Kimmel team's theme this year was "Growing Your Seeds of Innovation." I would like to thank Deb Heidzig and Connie Reimers-Hild for helping to welcome nearly 4,000 people to the Kimmel Education and Research Center over the weekend. Also thanks to Lindsay Chichester, Sara Ellicott, Janet Hinrichsen, Jessica Jones, Sarah Purcell, and Deb Weitzenkamp who also helped to promote Extension education throughout the weekend event. UNL's Food Science and Technology Club held the first Iron Chef: Battle Apple Jack competition while also selling famous Dairy Store ice cream. Eight Nebraska businesses educated attendees about their products throughout the weekend.
Apple Jack is a great way to help our stakeholders realize the value of Extension while having fun in the process! Thanks again to all Extension faculty and staff that helped make this event a success!
Extension in the City Kickoff
“Extension in the City’ was unveiled at the Omaha Agri-Business Club’s luncheon as part of the River City Rodeo events, Friday, September 23, 2011, at Century Link Center in Omaha. Extension in the City is a commitment by Extension to create a higher level of visibility in urban households through web marketing and social media. Linda Lovgren with Lovgren Marketing, Dave Ulferts, and Susan Williams led the development of the campaign. Nebraskan’s are familiar with the rural components of Extension, and our desire is to help urban Nebraskan’s learn more about what Extension has to offer. Extension in the City also hopes to foster relationships with urban businesses. During the past several years, Extension has worked with the Gallup to help reach more youth through new and exciting programs that focus on the entrepreneurial aspects of youth leadership through ESI.
James Krieger, Vice Chairman and CFO of Gallup, addressed the luncheon audience and spoke on Gallup’s vision of partnering with Extension to develop young entrepreneurs. Krieger commented that helping youth understand social responsibility and building tomorrow’s leaders and entrepreneurs through 4-H activities and afterschool programming was very important in both the rural and urban communities of Nebraska. Currently, Douglas and Sarpy counties have over 28,000 youth involved in Extension programming. Almost 2,000 urban school youth participated in school tours learning about science, technology, and agriculture.
To conclude the program Susan Williams and Vernon Waldren featured the new website: http://www.ExtensionInTheCity.com which focuses on Environment, Food, Families and Youth programs. We invite you to watch the promotional video which explains Extension in the City, http://www.extensioninthecity.com/news/.
