Lace Up for Mel Shinn Day

The Annual Mel Shinn Day 5K Race
The Annual Mel Shinn Day 5K Race

An annual tradition at Nebraska Law, Mel Shinn Day brings students together for friendly competition in honor of 1966 alum, Mel Shinn. Shinn came to Nebraska from Hawaii to play baseball for the University of Nebraska and his passion for sports continued throughout his life. When Shinn died unexpectedly, his Nebraska Law classmates established a fund to support recreational activities for law students. Since then, Mel Shinn has turned into a day of fun for Nebraska Law students that includes an all school picnic, bocce ball and badminton tournaments, 5K race, mini-golf in the library, bowling and 3 on 3 basketball. Sponsored by the Student Bar Association, Mel Shinn Day occurs early in September each year and helps kick off the semester!
