What: Eleven years ago Nebraska added Article I Section 29 to its Constitution, which states:
"Only marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized in Nebraska. The uniting of two persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same-sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Nebraska.
Allies & Advocates for GLBT Equality is inviting the law school community to discuss the amendment and its impact. Here are some questions to get you thinking: What was the amendment's purpose and has it been achieved? Does it unfairly restricts the rights of a class of people? Does it violate the U.S.Constitution? If so, which parts? Does it violate the Establishment Clause or protect the free exercise of religion? Do you agree with only part of the amendment? Is it consistent with the Nebraska State Motto: "Equality Before the Law"?
All views are welcome and encouraged. If we have a good enough turn out we will break into small groups, discuss, and then have a representative from each group share their insights.
