One of the under-celebrated resources that supports student success offered by the University Libraries can be found in every Canvas course across campus-subject and course guides! Subject and course guides are curated lists of resources, created by librarians, for a specific class or on a general discipline and their purpose is to support students as they complete research centered coursework. Each guide has an author, which can be contacted if students have further questions. We recently tallied our most popular guides, basically our top ten list of the most visited guides for 2021-2022 academic year so far! Count down with us to see what ended up being the most popular guide at Nebraska.

Number 10: Virtual Learning Tutorials which provides interactive tutorials providing step-by-step and how-to instruction on a variety of topics such as how to search the catalog, use the libraries, and how to get started with the research process. There are also tutorials on specific databases (i.e., Web of Science, Scopus).

Number 9: Sociology, created by librarian Erica DeFrain, this guide provides research methods and reference materials, list of sociology databases, how to write a literature review, and links to citation management tools.

Number 8: Music Research Guide is an extensive guide to the music resources for students by the type of instrument or program they are learning. Examples include trumpet, percussion, choral, and band. Under each section students will find links to repertoire lists, links to periodicals and more.

Number 7: University of Nebraska–Lincoln is a fun guide with current links to the University budget, salary, information about current and past building, its history, team names, and songs.

Number 6: The SciPop Talks! Guide chronicles the popular series of talks about science in popular culture (movies, books, and games) with links to resources in the Libraries collection. The talks were held from 2014-2020 and some of the topics include zombies, Harry Potter, Comic Book physics, vampires, and more.

Number 5: ReAction! Chemistry in the Movies lists all the movies, from the book of the same title, that are held in the Libraries collection. Mark Griep, associate professor of Chemistry, has provided the movie descriptions.

Number 4: Canvas General Guide is the Libraries’ basic guide that is linked to all Canvas courses that don’t have their own specially curated guide.

Number 3: BSAD 220 provides support to the students and their research assignments in this business class. Some of the resources include contact information with the business librarian, best databases to use, and citation management tools.

Number 2: Undergraduate Research Journals provides lists and links to journals that will publish undergraduate research. If you are a student motivated to share your research or have ambition to publish, this resource lists journals in every discipline.

And the Number 1 guide at UNL is LIFE 120/121 Labs. This guide provides the resource and composition guidance for this survey class taken by hundreds of students each semester and has well over 2000 views this spring.
