Webinar: Designing and Operating Roads for the Aging Population

Ohio LTAP is offering a two-part webinar course on Designing and Operating Roads for the Aging Population on May 24. Registration is open for this free opportunity.

This 2-part webinar series provides an overview of recommendations for designing and operating roads to better meet the aging population’s needs. Keeping our roads safe for older users is an emphasis area for many transportation agencies. There are over 40 million licensed drivers in the United States aged 65 or older – a 33% increase from 10 years ago. Older drivers represent about 18% of all licensed drivers nationwide, with even higher concentrations in some states. Aging can impact a variety of skills and abilities necessary for safe driving. This workshop will familiarize participants with the physical, perceptual, and cognitive impairments that can impact the ability to safely navigate a vehicle, and illustrate key strategies that agencies can implement for improving safety and mobility for older roadway users. It is intended for transportation professionals involved in designing, constructing, operating and maintaining streets and roads. The workshop content is directly derived from FHWA’s Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population and will familiarize participants with the recommended practices from the Handbook in the areas of highway geometry, operations, and traffic control devices.

Instructor – Mark Doctor, P.E., Safety and Design Engineer, Federal Highway Administration Office of Technical Services / Resource Center (Atlanta, GA).
