Budapest Semesters in Mathematics and Mathematics Education
The Budapest Semesters in Mathematics and Mathematics Education are programs for students interested in Advanced Mathematics and in learning from a different perspective. Due to COVID-19, both programs will be running in an online format for the Spring 2021 semester.
Taste of BSM-Spring 2021 Online Learning Opportunity
BSM is excited to offer a no-tuition, non-credit Spring 2021 online learning opportunity during this challenging time as our in-person study abroad program was canceled due to COVID-19. NEW: BSM is also offering the option to take up to two courses for credit with home school approval.
Although they hope to welcome students back to a full program in the near future, they have made the decision to use some of our reserves to provide this opportunity to students who are passionate about mathematics and are willing to take on extra work in addition to their regular classes this fall. It is also an opportunity for our organization to continue to support our exceptional teacher-scholars in Hungary who have been affected by the closure of our tuition supported program.
They are accepting applications from undergraduate students and recent graduates of North American Colleges and Universities in the Math Community to participate in this online small group enrichment program. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in up to two advanced math courses taught by our BSM Professors in Hungary. If you have some extra time while at home or at school in the spring, think about a virtual BSM class.
Eligibility: BSM prerequisite is to have successfully completed either Abstract Algebra (MATH 310) or Real Analysis (MATH 325). (or both)
Please visit https://www.budapestsemesters.com/spring-2021-distance-learning-opportunity/ for more information. Application deadline is January 8, 2021. Acceptance emails will be sent by January 15, 2021. Classes begin February 1, 2021.
Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education
Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education (BSME) is a study abroad program in mathematics education. BSME participants explore the Hungarian pedagogy, in which a strong and explicit emphasis is placed on problem solving, mathematical creativity, and communication.
BSME will run an online program for the Spring 2021 session, in which students may take 1 to 5 courses. They will issue credits that are transferable to students’ home institutions. Given the strong demand for teachers to learn about online instruction in the current climate, the session will have a dual focus on the Hungarian pedagogy and online instruction. Note that a BSME participant doesn’t necessarily have to be pursuing a secondary teaching license—a genuine interest in teaching and mathematics is what we’re looking for.
Why BSME? Today’s teachers are expected to provide students with opportunities to struggle
productively towards understanding, and the Hungarian pedagogy has the potential to play a critical role
in this endeavor. At BSME, we are excited for our participants to develop this new perspective on
mathematics education.
The application for the Spring 2021 session is due on January 11. It is reviewed on a rolling basis, so apply early! More information, including the online application, can be found at https://bsmeducation.com/spring-2021-online-overview/.
Students who do either program would also be eligible for the Virtual Program Scholarship from the Education Abroad Office. If you are interested in the scholarship program, please schedule a meeting with an Education Abroad advisor or visit https://educationabroad.unl.edu/virtual-international-programs.
