Academic Profile
Over 80 graduate faculty are available to guide dissertation research in virtually every area of mathematics. Highlights of our program include an NSF Research Training Group grant in Pure and Applied Topology. Other prominent areas are number theory, ergodic theory, algebraic and differential geometry, combinatorics, computational mathematics, math biology, and analysis.
Preparation and Tracks
PhD applicants can choose between the theoretical and applied track. The tracks differ in their course requirements but provide the same research opportunities. Theoretical track applicants are expected to have completed year-long sequences in real analysis and abstract algebra. Preparation for the applied track should include at least one course in real analysis, advanced linear algebra, and computational science.
Training and Outcomes
We foster a highly active research environment in which students are introduced to cutting edge research topics, publish papers, forge collaborations, travel to conferences, and organize research seminars. A majority of recent PhD graduates placed in competitive postdoctoral positions at strong research schools like Stanford, UCLA, ETH-Zurich, Brown, Michigan, Northwestern, and Duke. Students interested in non-academic careers benefit from an industry-oriented lecture series and professional training organized by our Erdós Institute.
Student Community
Our students participate in a wide range of academic and social activities, including our Math Grad Student Association, student chapters of the AWM and SIAM, and numerous working groups. New doctoral students are assigned a peer mentor and may also choose to be assigned a faculty mentor to coach them through their transition to graduate life following best practices of the National Math Alliance.
Funding and Support
All doctoral students in good standing are guaranteed support as Graduate Teaching Associates. Numerous non-teaching funding opportunities include University Fellowships, departmental Fellowships, and Graduate Research Associateships. As many as 40% of PhD students have been supported in positions without teaching duties in a single semester.

Master of Actuarial & Quantitative Risk Management at Ohio State

Program Synopsis
The Master of Actuarial and Quantitative Risk Management (MAQRM) program covers a unique combination of actuarial science, quantitative risk management and data science. These areas have become increasingly intertwined, creating a demand for graduates with such expertise. The curriculum includes innovative courses in risk management, stochastic calculus and data analytics along with more traditional skill training in actuarial science, financial economics, statistics and numerical analysis.
Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire proficiency in the core subjects of actuarial and financial mathematics. Those who choose the traditional actuarial science route will become proficient in the topic areas covered by the exams of the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. Graduates will be able to communicate technical results clearly and effectively.
Thesis and Non-Thesis Options
Students may choose to complete the degree via either a thesis option or a non-thesis culminating examination. Either option provides students the opportunity to showcase their subject matter expertise. The thesis option may be especially valuable for students considering eventually pursuing another advanced degree.
Practicum Experience
Each student completes a practicum course designed to provide an opportunity to pursue special studies not offered through the standard curriculum. Presentations will be given by practicing actuaries on topics from their fields of expertise, and students will in turn give presentations on the results of class projects covering topics in actuarial science, quantitative risk management and data science.
Connections with Employers
The program has well-established connections within the insurance industry and related businesses involved with risk management. This creates ample opportunity for practical experiences and mentoring. Most MAQRM students complete at least one internship prior to graduation, and past students have found employment with industry leaders like Nationwide, KeyBank, DHL, Humana, Encova Insurance and Westfield Insurance.
