Cedar Point Biological Station Courses

Cedar Point Biological Station (CPBS) offers courses each summer in Western Nebraska at a retired Girl Scout camp near Lake McConaughy. Most of their courses are in Biology, but they also offer ACE 5 and ACE 7 courses as well.

Why should I take CPBS classes?

Although the CPBS course motto could easily be ‘more than just fulfilling requirements’, the fact is that they also are a very practical way for students to meet requirements and complete their degree.

Strategic reasons to take Cedar Point classes include:
1) Courses offer multiple opportunities to double-dip, including several ACE opportunities and upper-level courses, eventually also the experiential learning requirement as well,
2) Opportunities to do research and work,
3) Get to know research professors who might take them on during the academic year,
4) Get to know professors who can write them more meaningful reference letters,
5) Complete a 4-credit course in 3 weeks or a 3-credit course in 2 weeks,
6) Graduate on time or even early,
7) Catch up on requirements, and
8) Lighten their academic calendar load.

Great life experience reasons to take Cedar Point classes include:
1) Unique courses that students are not likely to find elsewhere,
2) Field-based and experiential courses,
3) Small class size,
4) Fun and supportive environment helps students focus and excel,
5) Lifelong memories of life on the lake, travel around the region, and being immersed in nature. The majority of alumni agree that their participation at Cedar Point was a major highlight of their educational experience at Nebraska!
6) Dining with classmates and researchers gets you a chance to see and hear about research up close, and
7) Live in cabins in the canyons overlooking the lake.

How do I enroll?

Enrolling is easy! There are 4 steps:
1) Fill out the application form, which includes an option for picking which class you would like to take.
2) Pay the $100 non-refundable deposit. If the class is not full, your place is now reserved.
3) Wait for your registration code to arrive. Since summer registration doesn’t begin until March, you have to wait for formal registration.
4) When registration opens, go register for the class with your code.

One more step! Apply for funding!

Cedar Point has funds to cover the R&B costs for many students. The going rate for R&B is $250 per week. So the costs are:
1) Three-week course - $750. This includes the $100 deposit.
2) Two-week course - $500. Also includes the deposit.
3) Scholarships can cover all but the $100 deposit.
