Rowlee Lecture: Stuart White - A Brief History of Classification

On Friday, March 24th at 4 pm, the Math Department presents the 2023 Howard Rowlee Lecture. The Howard Rowlee Lecture is an annual event that seeks to bring internationally acclaimed scholars in the mathematical sciences to Nebraska to promote public understanding of mathematical research and to stimulate the environment for mathematics research at Nebraska.

Presenter: Stuart White of St. John's College, University of Oxford Mathematical Institute

Title: A Brief History of Classification

Abstract: Sorting objects comes naturally to humans from books in the library, to elements in the periodic table. But how do mathematicians decide whether things are the same? In this talk I’ll illustrate examples of ‘classifications’ from different areas of mathematics: what are we looking for in a satisfactory classification?

A reception at 3 pm in 348 Avery Hall will precede the lecture.
