Math and Data Science Student Spotlight
The Math and Data Science Student Spotlight is your opportunity to learn a bit more about one of your fellow Math and Data Science majors at UNL. This week, Jenna Wakefield from Lincoln, Nebraska, is in the spotlight.
Name: Jenna Wakefield
Majors: Mathematics and Biochemistry
Year in School: Junior
Where are you from?
I am from Lincoln, Nebraska.
What gets you excited about Math?
I have always liked math because it is something consistent and not ambiguous. I also like the feeling of accomplishment after solving a difficult problem.
Favorite math class or instructor so far? Why?
My favorite math class so far was Differential Equations because it is a mixture of many of my former math classes and has uses in real-world situations.
What are you excited about doing after graduation?
After graduation I plan on going to medical school. Along with being a Math major, I am also a Biochemistry major and on the pre-medicine track. I look forward to learning new things and eventually being able to help others daily.
What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?
One of my goals was to get involved in research. I am currently doing a UCARE project in a virology lab. I never expected that I would be creating a vaccine for Canine Influenza, but here I am!
What do you wish you would have known when you started as a Math Major that you know now?
When I started I wish I had known how important building relationships with classmates is. Things can be difficult when learning them for the first time, but other students in the class are great study partners!
What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?
Items on my bucket list include: getting into medical school, helping my RSO, Dance Marathon, raise $250,000 for our local children's hospital, and going skydiving!
