MATH 398: Research Experience in Mathematics (Knot Theory REU)
Professor Román Aranda (jarandacuevas2@unl.edu) is looking for at least 1 more student to enroll in his MATH 398 course for the Spring 2025 Pre-Session, which will be taught synchronously via Zoom on Mondays thru Fridays at 9:00-11:00 am from Thursday, January 2nd to Friday, January 17th.
**satisfies Experiential Learning (EL) requirement
**minimum enrollment is 8 (NEED ONE PERSON TO SIGN UP)
GOAL: To develop a foundational understanding of the field of low-dimensional topology:
1. Students will attempt to make progress on unanswered questions about invariants of knots in 4-space
2. Students will also gain understanding of the logistics of mathematical research:
a. how to find and read mathematical research papers,
b. they will understand what goes into a good research presentation, and
c. they will write professionally and mathematically using the LaTex package.
3. A possible (but certainly not guaranteed) outcome is that students may coauthor an original research paper to be submitted for peer review and publication at the end of this course.
4. Finally, this course will prepare students to do further research in mathematics, with the goal of being able to funnel their experiences into successful UCARE or external REU applications.
Prerequisites: knowledge on what a proof is (MATH 309 or similar)
