New Spring 2025 Course: Undergraduate Research in Mathematical Modeling and Data Analytics (MATH 191)
Who: First or Second-year Students at UNL
The course is open to all majors who have taken Intermediate Algebra (Calculus not required) and who are interested in exploring topics in mathematical modeling and data analytics. Data Science majors planning to take MATH 203 could take this MATH 191 course instead of MATH 203.
What: MATH 191 - Math Research: Models & Data
In a 3-credit hour course, students will conduct research in small groups to develop data literacy, creativity, technology fluency, problem solving, and professional presentation skills.
When: Spring 2025 term, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Time 1:00-2:20
Initial class meetings will occur simultaneously at SCC and UNL for virtual collaboration. Then, students will select a research topic to investigate, meeting weekly with instructors and peers.
Where: UNL (Bessey Hall 108) and virtually
UNL students will meet on City Campus initially and virtually with students from SCC. Later, collaboration will occur across UNL and SCC campuses, virtually, or asynchronously.
How:
- Focus on exploring health, housing, education, business, and other topics and solve authentic problems through mathematical modeling and data analytics.
- Introduction to mathematical modeling process, technology (e.g., Excel, Desmos), and existing modeling lessons. Example topics include equitable access to healthy food and clean drinking water, exponential decay of prescription pain medication concentration, and disease-carrying organism classification
- Research conducted on a topic of choice.
Outcomes:
- Presentation at a regional symposium and a final research paper
- Engagement with local industry and community members
