Advising Updates

Hello Math Majors,

A little more than a week ago, I discovered an issue in MyPlan at the screen where you would select either "Advising" or "Advising - Arts & Sciences" when scheduling an appointment, which may have led to confusion and an inability to find a time for a meeting with me (except for March 21st). I have corrected this issue, so you should now be able to schedule an appointment with me via MyPlan normally by clicking either "Advising" or "Advising - Arts & Sciences" at step 7 of the instructions available here: https://myplan.unl.edu/MyPLANSchedulinganapt.pdf. I apologize for any confusion that this caused, and I really do want you to schedule appointments with me during the my advising hours below. If you need any assistance with scheduling a meeting, please don't hesitate to call me at 402-472-4319 or email me at dpellatz@unl.edu.

Today is the beginning of the seventh week of the Spring 2019 semester. You have likely completed your first exams or major projects/papers in most classes, and you know much more about how the rest of the semester is going to go. This is also the point of the semester when courses can become more challenging, so remember that you have free resources available to you. Your course instructor (and TA if your course has one) is going to be your best resource to be successful in any course. Visit your instructor during their office hours or contact them to schedule an appointment. You are likely to get much better assistance with class during office hours than by asking a couple of questions immediately before or after class.

The First-Year Experience and Transition Programs (FYE) office has several resources available to provide assistance with classes and study skills. At the FYE office in 127 Love Library South, you can meet with an Academic Success Coach who can help with a whole range of study skills. Instructions for scheduling an appointment can be found here. The Academic Success Coaches also hold workshops every week that cover things like reading & note-taking strategies, time management, and test preparation. These workshops are always held on Tuesdays at 4 pm and Wednesdays at 5 pm in 221 Love Library South, and you can find a complete schedule here. The FYE office also sponsors a Study Stop in the Adele Hall Learning Commons (Love Library North) on Mondays thru Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 pm. You can find tutoring in many courses with subjects like Biology, English, Sociology, and Spanish covered. A complete subject schedule for the Study Stop is available here. FYE also has information about navigating campus resources and brochures about things like study skills and time management. This information can be found here. Lastly, the FYE office is not just for first year students. The Academic Success Coaches can help anyone, so please check out what they have to offer.

Lastly, don't forget about the other academic resources that are available on campus like the Chemistry Resource Center, the Physics Resource Room, the Speech Lab, and the Writing Center. More information about all of these places and a few more can be found here.

If you have an issue and you don't know where to turn, please don't hesitate to come see me. Academic advisors are more than just course scheduling aids, and we work hard to know the resources that are available to you on campus.

Thanks,
Doug
