Advising Updates

Hello Math Majors,

Welcome back from Spring Break and welcome to Priority Registration for the Fall 2019 semester. If you haven't thought about classes for the Fall 2019 and Summer 2019 semesters yet, you really need to do this now. I have both appointments and walk-in meetings available for the next three weeks, and I have listed my advising hours at the bottom. I look forward to meeting with you soon. Please see the items within the newsletter about the new Enrollment Scheduler on MyRed and the new Husker Hub. These are going to be important things for you to know how to use going forward.

With this week, I wanted to share with you some information that I have come across in my time as the assigned advisor for Mathematics. There are certainly opportunities for someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and they would include a few things that need a Math background and many things that don’t necessarily need a Math background (but would definitely benefit from it). You can find a document here that describes some of the possibilities that are open to Math majors, and it is includes strategies for pursuing those fields. I would also suggest looking at some of the job and internship opportunities that are listed on Handshake. If you haven't logged into Handshake yet, you will find more information about it here: https://careers.unl.edu/handshake. In addition to Handshake, you could look at the job and internship opportunities listed on Math Club's Research and Internships and Graduate Programs in Mathematics pages. I have also updated the Careers in Mathematics page, which has a list of many of the professional communities with job boards.

I also understand how many students choose a major out of interest in the field, but they have no idea what they want to do with it after graduation. I found myself in a similar position when I began my career as an undergraduate student, and I felt that I was pigeonholed into a particular career or after graduation path at times in my major. We also have resources available that can help you determine different fields and careers that you might be interested in. For example, you can take the Focus2 assessment that would help you connect your interests, skills, and values to different career fields. You just need to register for a Focus2 account here using the access code "huskers" to get started (enter "huskers" in the blank for "Your Access Code"). In addition, you could look at enrolling in CASC 200: Career Development for Arts and Sciences as a way to help find your pathway forward. Kristen Aldrich and Meagan Savage teach the CASC 200 course in both a lecture and online format during both the fall and spring semesters. Kristen and Meagan take both appointments and walk-in meetings daily if you would like to speak with them more about your possible opportunities after graduation.

Remember, there is no right or wrong direction to go after graduation as long as you have a plan that you are comfortable with. Still confused about where to start? Please don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with me.

Thanks,
Doug
