Hello Meteorology-Climatology Majors,

I hope your Fall 2021 semester is continuing to proceed smoothly and that you are stay healthy and safe. With Priority Registration starting yesterday (Monday, October 25), I am staying pretty busy with appointments, drop-in meetings, and emails, so please give me a little extra time to respond to your emails. Remember I have have plenty of appointment and virtual drop-in availability if you need to get questions answered, and it might be faster than writing out your questions in an email.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, we believe in the motto (unofficially) of Academics + Experience = Opportunities! The Academics part is relatively straightforward: take the right classes for your degree requirements, take the right classes for your interests, take the right classes for the skills that you want to learn, do the best that you can in all of those classes, and pick your general education and elective classes wisely.

The Experience part is usually much harder. There are five main areas where you can gain experience: internships, research, education abroad, service, and leadership.

There is no time like the present to start if you haven’t put any thought into how to gain experience. This weekly newsletter usually contains opportunities for most if not all five areas. Try researching opportunities with our College of Arts and Sciences Career Coaches, University Career Services, Education Abroad, Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement, or the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Science's Research Areas if you don’t see anything that interests you.

Talk to an advisor, a career coach, a faculty mentor, or even your friends and classmates if you are still having trouble finding something interesting. Almost all opportunities are earned, so get to work!

Best wishes, Doug
