UNL Meteorology-Climatology

Hello Meteorology-Climatology Majors,

In the last week prior to Spring Break, I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. I know that there are many exams this week, which can be stressful, and I wish you well with thing going into Spring Break. If you or your family is being impacted in any way by the current conflict in the Ukraine, please do not hesitate to reach out to me as it is possible that UNL will have resources that can help.

While you relax a bit over Spring Break, please try to take some time to reflect on how the first half to the Spring 2022 semester has gone and what you have left for the second half of the semester. It is normally not too late to make some changes for the second half of the semester to improve in each of your courses.

The official halfway point is this Friday, March 11. Friday, March 11 is also the last day of semester to change a course from graded to Pass/No Pass or to change a course from Pass/No Pass to graded. A few points to remember about the option to change a course from graded to Pass/No Pass. For the Meteorology-Climatology major, no Meteorology-Climatology course or Ancillary Science/Math course can be taken for a Pass/No Pass grade and counted toward the Meteorology-Climatology major requirements. Any ACE or CDR requirement can be fulfilled by a course taken for a Pass/No Pass grade, but there is a 24 credit hour limit on Pass/No Pass graded courses for your degree. Courses completed with a No Pass grade do not count toward these limits.

The Pass/No Pass grading option allows a student to pursue a Pass or No Pass grade instead of a letter grade for a specific course, but not all courses allow the Pass/No Pass grading basis. After changing to the Pass/No Pass grading basis, you must earn the equivalent of a C or better grade in order to earn a Pass grade. You must also earn a C or better grade in all of your Meteorology-Climatology major and your Ancillary Science/Math courses. However, C- to D- grades will fulfill an ACE or CDR requirement or elective hours. The main advantage to Pass/No Pass grades is that they do not count toward your GPA.

The Office of the University Registrar has instructions for changing a course to or from the Pass/No Pass grading basis available at https://registrar.unl.edu/student/registration/tutorials/#editenrollment (using the Enrollment Scheduler) or at https://registrar.unl.edu/student/registration/classic-tips/#passnopass (using MyRed). I would be happy to help you make this change if you have any difficulty with doing so.

Remember with Spring Break being next week, there are only two weeks of classes between now and the beginning of Priority Registration for the Fall 2022 semester. Students on academic probation, students in their first or second semesters at UNL, or students who have completed 75+ credit hours have holds placed on their Summer 2022 and/or Fall 2022 semester registration. In almost all cases, I cannot lift these registration holds without a meeting to discuss how the current semester is going and what your future course plans. For students on academic probation, we may need to have a couple of meetings over the course of the semester, so I strongly, strongly encourage to schedule a meeting with me as soon as possible. I look forward to meeting with all of you!

Best wishes, Doug
