2022 Severe Storms and Doppler Radar Conference

The Central Iowa Chapter of the National Weather Association is hosting an "in-person" Severe Storms and Doppler Radar Conference from March 31 - April 2, 2022 in Ankeny, Iowa. The conference will take place at the Courtyard by Marriott and features the following speakers:

- Dr. Yvette Richardson, Penn State University, speaking on tornadogenesis.
- Rick Smith, NWS-OUN, will speak on mental health challenges for meteorologists in extreme events.
- Krissy Hurley, NWS-BNA, speaking on the deadly Waverly, TN flash floods of 2020.
- Fred Glass, NWS-STL, will speak on the Dec. 10 tornadoes in the St. Louis area including the Amazon Facility tornado strike.
- Tim Marshall will discuss tornado rating challenges and overview of the recent December 10 tornado impacts.
- Kathy Stewart O'Nan will give a mayor's perspective of the Mayfield, KY EF-4 tornado.
- Rick Smith, NWS-OUN, will also speak on the April 28, 2020 hailstorms in the Southern Plains.
- Brett McIntyre, WHO-TV (Des Moines), will cover the broadcast challenges associated with the warp-speed Dec 15 tornadoes.
- NWS-DMX personnel will cover the record-breaking December 15, 2020 warp-speed severe weather outbreak in Iowa.

The Pam Daale and Tim Samaras Scholarships

Central Iowa Chapter of the National Weather Association is also offering two $1,500 scholarships to honor Pam Daale and Tim Samaras. The Tim Samaras Memorial Scholarship is for students who are pursuing a career in research meteorology. The Pam Daale Memorial Scholarship is focused on students pursuing careers in broadcast or operational meteorology.

2022 Pam Daale Memorial Scholarship in Broadcast and Operational Meteorology
Eligibility: The $1,500 scholarship is available to all full-time students pursuing a career in research meteorology, having a sophomore or junior status at the time of the chapter’s annual conference on March 31, 2022 in Ankeny, IA and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0-point scale). The selectee is strongly encouraged to attend the conference in person, and will receive up to $250 stipend for travel and lodging, and the conference registration fee will be waived.

Application Procedures:
To apply for the scholarship, the following items are necessary:
- Complete the following application
- Upload a copy of transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) from all post-secondary schools attended. Only one transcript is required if it includes all post-secondary course work
- Provide the name, address, phone number, and email of a college reference (professor/instructor)
- Complete the two essays on the application

Deadline: Application materials must be received by March 4th, 2022. The recipient will be notified around March 15th.
