Hello Meteorology-Climatology Majors,
I hope you are doing well as we enter the eighth week of the Fall 2022 semester and reach the midpoint of the semester. I will not be available for drop-in meetings on Monday, October 17th at 10-12 noon as I will be visiting a new campus southwest of Lincoln that morning. The months of October and November are very important during every fall semester as there are so many things that happen, and I want to start discussing them today.
First, the deadline to change a course from the Letter grade grading basis to the Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading basis or from P/NP grading basis to the Letter grade grading basis is Friday, October 14th. This deadline marks the half way point of the Fall 2022 semester. Changing a course to the P/NP grading basis gives you an opportunity to remove a course from counting toward your Fall 2022 semester GPA and cumulative GPA. P/NP graded courses are not included in your GPA calculation. However, P/NP graded courses cannot be counted toward some major or minor requirements, and some courses do not offer the P/NP grade option at all. Remember, you must achieve the equivalent of a C or better letter grade in order to earn a Pass grade, which means that you would be passing up the chance to earn credit for a course through a C- to a D- grade. Second, Priority Registration for the Spring 2023 semester will take place between Monday, October 24th and Tuesday, November 8th. Priority Registration is the time period during every fall and spring semester when you can start enrolling in classes for the next spring or fall semester. So, now is the time to start thinking about and planning out your Spring 2023 semester courses. You always have access to the Degree Planner and the Degree Audit through MyRed, and I recommend that you plan out three semesters in the advance to see where you going next semester and next year. Thus, you should be looking at plans for the Spring 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024 semesters unless you will graduate during that time period. On Monday, October 3rd, you should have received your Priority Registration "Appointment" in MyRed. This is not an appointment in the traditional sense. It is your first opportunity to enroll in classes for the Spring 2023 semester, and then you can enroll at any time after your "appointment" time has passed. Priority Registration "appointment" times are set by your class standing (i.e., senior, junior, sophomore, or freshmen), random assignment over the three days for each class level, and special groups that you might be a part of as a student. You also received access to the Spring 2023 semester class schedule on MyRed and the Enrollment Scheduler on Monday, October 3rd. Thus, you can start planning out your actual course meeting times and dates for the Spring 2023 semester NOW. The earlier that you schedule a meeting with me, the more likely it will be that you get your preferred meeting day and time.
Third, the deadline to withdraw from one or more classes for the Fall 2022 semester is Friday, November 11th. This deadline marks the three quarter point (or 75% mark) of the semester, and it is much more difficult, if not impossible, to withdraw from a course after the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawing from a course means that you abandoning the option to complete the course for the remainder of the semester, and you will receive a grade of "W" after doing so. The "W" grade does not impact your semester or cumulative GPA, but it can impact your eligibility for future scholarships or financial aid. Thus, you should really talk to a staff member or specialist in the Husker Hub if you have questions about the impact of a course withdrawal. I would also be happy to discuss the implications of withdrawing from a course on your academics, and while this might just mean repeating the course next semester, it can be more complicated than that.
As you can see, the time period between now and Friday, November 11th will be a busy one, so it is a GREAT idea to start your planning and to start asking your questions now rather than in a month.
