7th annual Midwest Student Conference on Atmospheric Research
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences (DAS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is delighted to announce that abstract submissions and registration for the 7th annual Midwest Student Conference on Atmospheric Research (MSCAR) are now open! MSCAR will be held as a hybrid of in person and virtual attendance on September 30th - October 1st. There is no fee to submit an abstract. Registration is $40 for in-person attendance and $6 for virtual attendance. Students must register in order to attend and present.
MSCAR is a budding, student-led conference designed for both graduate and undergraduate students to present their research and gain feedback before the annual AGU and AMS meetings over winter break, as well as learn from other students, distinguished scientists, and researchers. We are happy to announce this year’s keynote speakers: Dr. Russ Schumacher (Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Colorado State University, Colorado State Climatologist, Director of the Colorado Climate Center), Dr. Naomi Oreskes (Henry Charles Lea Professor of History of Science, Affiliated Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University), and Dr. Frank Lombardo (Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Co-Director of the Extreme Wind Resilience Center).
This year, we plan to also have a Severe Weather Workshop hosted by Dr. Andrew Taylor (Science and Operations Officer at the Central Illinois National Weather Service forecast office in Lincoln, IL) and an Early Careers Panel featuring featuring Dr. Deanna Hence (Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Andrew Pritchard (Nutrien Senior Meteorologist), and Sara Amatuzio (Catastrophe Research Manager at State Farm). We are also excited to announce an in person Graduate Schools and Careers Fair as well as an open house exhibit of our Doppler on Wheels (DOW) facilities. Additionally, we are hosting a Hackathon the week before MSCAR from September 24th to the 29th. Students may compete individually or in teams in order to solve problems related to the atmospheric sciences.
The deadline to submit an abstract is September 8th, 2023 at 11:59 pm CT, and the registration deadline is September 22nd, 2023 at 11:59 pm CT. The forms for submitting an abstract and registering for the conference, as well as more information about MSCAR can be found on our website (https://atmos.illinois.edu/mscar). Additionally, we have a hotel block reserved for conference attendees, with relevant information located under the Information for Attendees tab on the website.
