The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research/National Center for Atmospheric Research has three separate internship or research experience opportunities available for Summer 2025.
NSF NCAR Earth System Science Internship (NESSI)
The NSF NCAR Earth System Science Internship (NESSI), hosted by NSF NCAR Education, Engagement & Early-Career Development (EdEC), offers undergraduate students interested in Earth system sciences an opportunity to conduct research with NSF NCAR scientists from across all labs on a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, atmospheric science, computational science, engineering, and solar and space physics. Our Program is designed to support students and promote Earth system science through research, mentoring, and community building.
Applications for the 2025 NESSI are now OPEN and will close on January 6, 2025. Click here to learn more and to apply!
NCAR Computational and Information Systems Lab's (CISL) Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Science (SIParCS)
Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Science (SIParCS) embed students in CISL to provide them with significant hands-on experience in high-performance computing and related fields that use HPC for scientific discovery and modeling.
SIParCS (pronounced sigh-parks) is for university students who are interested in pursuing careers in such areas as:
- Application Optimization
- Data Science
- Machine Learning
- Numerical Methods
- Software Engineering
- Supercomputing Systems Operations
- Visualization
Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. university and available 40 hours per week from May 19-August 1, 2025 (tentative dates). Undergraduates completing their sophomore year or higher are eligible, as are seniors who are graduating in December 2025 if they are enrolling in graduate school.
Applications for the 2025 SIParCS are now OPEN and will close on January 21, 2025. Click here to learn more and to apply!
UCAR NSF Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)
NSF SOARS is dedicated to broadening participation in the atmospheric and related sciences. NSF SOARS is an undergraduate to graduate program built around a summer research internship, mentoring by top scientists and engineers, and a supportive learning community. In addition to the summer internship, NSF SOARS includes year-round support, funding to attend conferences and last-dollar tuition scholarships. Successful Protégés are eligible to participate in the program for up to four years.
NSF SOARS encourages applications from individuals who are members of communities that are historically marginalized in the atmospheric and related sciences; including students who are Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Hispanic or Latinx, woman, first-generation college students, veterans, and students with disabilities. Students from Minority Serving Institutions are encouraged to apply. NSF SOARS welcomes students who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community; students who have experienced, and worked to overcome educational or economic disadvantages, and/or have personal or family circumstances that may complicate their continued progress in research careers.
Applications for the 2025 NSF SOARS are now OPEN and will close on January 21, 2025. Click here to learn more and to apply!
