Intern Meteorologist for North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board

The Department of Water Resources (DWR) is looking for an Intern Meteorologist to serve the citizens of our state as a part of Team ND.
Summary of Work
Assist the radar meteorologist in the direction of cloud seeding operations from a radar field office located in Bowman, ND, and prepare daily convective forecasts. Operations are conducted around the clock, seven days per week, as weather conditions dictate. Job requirements include the operation of a 5-cm digital Doppler weather radar equipped with IRIS and TITAN software, direction of seeding aircraft, use of two-way radio, data recording, and making daily convective forecasts. The NDARB will conduct a pre-project ground school and orientation in Fargo, ND on May 28-30, 2025; all project personnel are required to attend. The field phase of the project begins at noon on June 1, 2025 and continues as weather dictates, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, through the project’s conclusion on August 31, 2025. Allowance will be made for an intern needing to return to school during the latter half of August.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be majors in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or Related Field.
Good communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of meteorological course work, especially courses in radar meteorology, weather modification, cloud physics and forecasting, and computer knowledge of Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix-based operating systems and software are also strong qualifying factors.

Operate/interpret 5-cm digital Doppler weather radar equipped with IRIS and TITAN software and simultaneously direct multiple aircraft for cloud seeding operations. Identification of suitable clouds; clear communication with aircraft via two-way radio; operation of Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix-based software; pilot briefings; meteorological record keeping; direction and supervision of an intern meteorologist; supervision of chemical inventory; and assisting with radar calibrations and maintenance. Other duties include monitoring local weather conditions, interaction with National Weather Service personnel and the public, and data entry. The NDARB (North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board) will conduct a pre-project ground school and orientation in Fargo, ND on May 28-30, 2025; all project personnel are required to attend. Bachelor of Arts or Science in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or Related Field by the start of ground school on May 28, 2025.

Experience with radar operation and short-term forecasting of deep convection; recent experience in operational convective cloud seeding.
