SUMMARY
The Community Outreach Specialist will work with team members and lead effort in the production of a collection of visual products that effectively communicate nitrogen cycle dynamics and ecosystem services as they relate to plants, animals, microbes, and abiotic conditions (like temperature) in the environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work within a team that conducts chemical, biochemical, molecular, and toxicological research on the effects of chemicals and other stressors on the environment, including effects of physical alterations of habitats, nutrient deficiencies, and invasive species.
Provide scientific information to resource managers, partners and the public, in such a way that makes research accessible to broad audiences. Communicate about the nitrogen cycle via innovative graphic and video platforms to fully and easily communicate how the nitrogen cycle works, so that diverse audiences can appreciate the cycle’s relevance for ecosystem health and function.
Utilize knowledge and interest in nitrogen biogeochemistry along with a graphics/video skillset that enables her/him to visualize N-cycle dynamics in engaging formats.
Interact with other scientists within the organization and lead production of a collection of visual products that effectively communicate nitrogen cycle dynamics and ecosystem services as they relate to plants, animals, microbes, and abiotic conditions (like temperature) in the environment.
Examples of visual products include animations, video, figures, and layered figures. In addition to visual arts skills, the selected individual must be able to understand and extract scientific information about the nitrogen cycle from published sources and represent that information in visual products.
Task 1. Aggregate nitrogen cycle information in visual products
Understand and aggregate information about components of the nitrogen cycle, how the nitrogen cycle works, and how the cycle interacts with plants, animals, microbes, and abiotic conditions (like temperature) in the environment.
Design and create innovative visual products, such as animations, video, figures, and layered figures that accurately communicate details of nitrogen cycle dynamics to non-expert audiences.
Work independently and as a member of a team. Our team can assist the selected individual with scientific aspects of the project, but we do not have significant visual arts skillsets; the visual arts aspects of the project will need to be led by the selected individual.
Address information needs of CNSS and other federal and state agencies, as needed.
Task 2. Adherence to All Appropriate Procedures
Adhere to all pertinent client procedures specified by laws, rules, policies, and guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining detailed records, tracking sources of information and citations, following protocols and standard operating procedures, and following all safety, biosecurity, data quality, animal care and use, and administrative guidance.
Schedule and Deliverables
Will need to access government servers to complete the deliverables.
SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY
Will report to CNSS Program Manager and may coordinate daily work with client representative (Task Order Manager).
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Undergraduate degree (or college courses) in a scientific related field to understand duties. Courses in nitrogen biogeochemistry and biology or ecology.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge in conducting outreach activities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of visual arts and video production skills
Ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work will be in an office environment, preferably onsite at the client (federal) location in Columbia, MO 65201, however part of this work may be done remotely. Travel is not required for this task.
Pursuant to U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, Cherokee Federal is now requiring that all employees be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by December 8th. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine (i.e., Moderna or Pfizer) or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine (i.e., Johnson & Johnson). As a prospective employee, you will fall under this requirement and proof of vaccination will be needed for on-boarding, should you be selected. Limited exemptions for religious or medical reasons will be considered.
TEMPORARY NOTE: On Tuesday, Dec. 7, a federal judge issued an injunction blocking President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal contractors (EO 14042). Cherokee Federal is monitoring the court case and awaiting a final ruling. As a result of the injunction, Cherokee Federal is halting the enforcement of the mandate, however, if the injunction is lifted and the mandate remains, Cherokee Federal must reenact its vaccine requirement
