FREN 483: French and Francophone Theater
MWF 1:30-2:20pm with Dr. Julia Frengs
3 credits | ACE 10
This course examines the dramatic genre throughout the centuries in the French-speaking world, with a focus on the question of alterity. We begin in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, then move to the imposition of theatrical conventions in the 17th and 18th centuries. We then examine the reactions to these conventions in the 19th and 20th centuries, and finish with an exploration of the dramatic genre in the 20th and 21st-centuries across the French speaking world, including the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, Oceania, and Canada. Throughout the course we will be asking how playwrights of French expression engage with the notion of “Otherness.”
