Tips to help adjust after the stress of finals

It's normal for the stress of finals to leave you with a variety of emotions to work through.
It's normal for the stress of finals to leave you with a variety of emotions to work through.

Getting to that last exam can feel like victory – but what comes next may feel ambiguous. After rigorous end-of-semester studies, it’s common to feel a variety of emotions.

Exhaustion: This can be normal after increased time focused on studying, staying up late and increased stress.
To help overcome this feeling, get your rest and spend time intentionally relaxing during the break. Recharging will help you prepare for the spring semester.

Disappointment: At times, you may experience disappointment if grades aren’t what you’d anticipated or if you had trouble retaining course content.
Know that it’s ok to feel disappointed, but instead try to focus on things within your control now. Look forward to the next semester and how you can make adjustments to help prepare for what lies ahead.

Uncertainty: Sometimes, the end of the semester can make you question your field of study or ability to complete next steps academically.
Getting to the root of your feelings is important – why are you feeling uncertain? Knowing what is troubling you can help you increase your sense of control. And if you still question your field of study, know that you can reach out to an academic advisor, the Center for Academic Success and Transition (CAST) or Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to talk.

Happiness: It can be a great relief and accomplishment to complete a semester and challenging courses.
It’s ok to celebrate your accomplishments from the semester – just be sure to remember why you achieved all that you did. Maybe it was your study habits, course attendance, or a balanced course load that helped your success. Probably all three!) Recognizing these efforts can help motivate you for future achievements.

If you need to talk to someone about your emotions, the professionals at CAPS are ready to assist. Call (402) 472-7450 to set up an appointment or visit an upcoming Let’s Talk session for an informal consult.
