The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts celebrates its fourth season this spring with an exploration of "The Ancient World Seen Through Modern Eyes."
The symposium will examine how the performing arts have returned consistently to classical antiquity and ancient mythologies to make sense of the contemporary.
The symposium includes a live performance of Lori Belilove and the Isadora Duncan Dance Co., 7:30 p.m. March 13 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The company will perform "Dances Inspired by Greek Antiquity," a reconstruction of famed choreographer Isadora Duncan's work.
Widely recognized as the mother of modern dance, Duncan created dances in homage to the Greek gods, and nymphs and heroes found in ancient Greek mythology. She infused her particular brand of American spirit with her love for the Greeks, convinced that the "Dance of the Future" should adhere to the aesthetic ideals of the past.
Belilove and company will present the work in a multimedia program including a lecture and the screening of rare film clips.

In addition to the performance, Belilove, the company's artistic director and founder, will give a lecture at 3:30 p.m. March 12 in Room 202 of UNL's Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. The talk is free and open to the public.
Belilove is considered a direct artistic "descendant" of Duncan and her prestigious performing career has earned her an international reputation as the premier interpreter of Duncan's work. Belilove earned a B.F.A. in dance, religion and classical studies at Mills College. She trained extensively in the modern technique of Doris Humphrey as a private student of Eleanor King and Ernestine Stodelle.
She has toured widely internationally, including in Brazil, Korea, West Africa, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Belilove maintains a studio and school in New York City and has held residencies at Harvard University, the Juilliard School, Northwestern University, Smith College, the University of Alabama, Ohio State University, Drexel University, and Franklin and Marshall College, among others.
Lori Belilove and the Isadora Duncan Dance Co. is the resident performing troupe of The Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation. Under the artistic direction of Belilove, the company performs more than 80 authentic dances that highlight the unique qualities of Duncan's repertoire. The all-female company is an ensemble of highly trained dancers, each having received private coaching from noted Duncan authorities.
The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium, directed by Rhonda Garelick, is sponsored by a grant from the Hixson-Lied Endowment, and presented in part with the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
