The UNL water polo team will compete in the Great Plains Division tournament Sept. 24 and 25 at Bob Devaney Sports Center. The tournament includes teams from Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Minnesota. All matches are free and open to the public.

UNL Water Polo is a member of the UNL Sport Club Council and a recognized student organization that was formed again in 2009 after being inactive for several years. The team will compete with other universities in the Great Plains Division Championship in Minneapolis Oct. 29-30.

Water polo consists of two teams of seven players each trying to score goals in the water. Game play involves swimming, treading water, passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing into a net defended by a goalie. The game dates back to 19th century England and is reminiscent of the game of rugby.
