Campus Recreation offers several American Red Cross water safety courses this spring, including Lifeguard Certification, Lifeguard Review, Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor Courses.

The Lifeguard Certification course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. It is a blended learning course that combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Registration deadline is Jan. 25. Participants must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course, attend and successfully complete the mandatory pre-course skills evaluation on Jan. 30th and complete the online blended learning prior to the first on-site skills session scheduled for Feb. 10.

The weekend certification course runs Feb 10-12. Course hours are 5-10 p.m. on Fri. and 9 a.m.-6p.m. on Sat. and Sun. Registration fees are $195 for UNL students and Campus Recreation members, $225 for non-members (plus a $35 non-refundable fee to the American Red Cross for the online learning component).

Campus Recreation also hires certified lifeguards and swim instructors year-round. For more information on aquatics classes or to apply to be a lifeguard, view the link below or email Jess Varlack at jvarlack2@unl.edu.
