Three University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music choirs will combine to perform on the same program Sunday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall for Evenings of Choirs.
The UNL Collegiate choir will be performing Joseph Haydn’s charming “Little Organ Mass” (Hob. XXII:7) and W. A. Mozart’s “Te Deum in C”—the latter written when the precocious composer was only 13 years old. Senior vocal performance major, Kate Johnson and faculty organist, Dr. Christopher Marks will be featured in the famous “Benedictus” movement from the mass, and both pieces will be accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble made up of some of the finest student players in the Glenn Korff School of Music.
The University Chorale will be featuring current students of the Glenn Korff School of Music as well as alumni. The theme for the University Chorale’s set is loosely based on spring and the beauty of nature with works by Debussy, Memley, Holst, and Hatfield.
The Varsity Men’s Chorus will open their portion of the concert with two works based on the text of Walt Whitman, “Listen to a Jubilant Song” and “Out of the Rolling Ocean.” It will be followed by a premiere by UNL composer David von Kampen written with text by Langston Hughes. The men’s chorus will perform a rare Gustav Holst piece influenced by Holst’s fascination of Hindu literature and Indian music. The choir will perform a popular Australian coral work that uses harmonic-overtone singing, which is an ancient vocal technique. The harmonic voices weave and dart around the choir above a drone. The choir will conclude with a choral work by India’s most famous composer, A.R. Rahman.
