At age 14, Carlotta Walls Lanier was the youngest of nine black students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The integration was a catalyzing event in the civil rights movement, testing the landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Walls was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP in 1958. She has been part of many organizations, including the Colorado AIDS Project, Jack and Jill of America and Urban League, and is president of the Little Rock Nine Foundation. In 2009, she completed her memoir, "A Mighty Long Way," with foreword by Bill Clinton.
The event, sponsored by the University Program Council, is free for University of Nebraska-Lincoln students with a valid NCard and $5 for faculty, staff and the public.
