OLLI will honor members who have served in the U.S. military with a special program and luncheon on Monday, Nov 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Auld Pavilion. The event is free to OLLI veterans and $15 for a guest and OLLI non-veterans. Thomas Berg, UNL lecturer in history and guest speaker, will talk about the significant of Armistice Day and Veterans Day.

We are recognizing one hundred years of the armistice signed between the allies of World War I and Germany at Compiegne, France, which took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Armistice Day continues today as Veterans Day.

World War I came to a close on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. One year later, President Woodrow Wilson established Armistice Day to remember “with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”
