When your student was younger and still living at home, you probably took them to their pediatrician for an annual physical.

Now that your student has entered adulthood and rarely gets ill, do they still need to see a health care provider every year?

Yes! The University Health Center medical staff recommends parents encourage their students to continue this annual tradition for several reasons:

  1. It holds them accountable on their current health behaviors and allows a professional to provide evidence-based tips for living a healthier lifestyle.
  2. It’s an opportunity to catch warning signs of potential diseases through screenings, tests and a review of their family medical history.
  3. Their immunization record will be reviewed to ensure they are protected against illnesses college-age students are at higher risk of contracting, such as meningitis, influenza, HPV, etc.
  4. It helps your student establish a relationship with a provider so that they’re able to provide the best care if your student is ever sick or needs help managing a disease.
  5. It’s a simple way for your student to gain real-world experience and access health care on their own, without your assistance.

If your student is ready to schedule their physical, remind them that this service is conveniently offered at the health center on campus.

How can my student schedule a physical at the health center?
Appointments are required, and it is recommended that students schedule it themselves by calling 402.472.5000.

What is the cost?
Physicals are not covered by student fees and will have a charge. This charge can be submitted to your health insurance. Many plans cover most or all of the charge. For questions about billing and insurance, call 402.472.7435.

How can I prepare my student for their appointment?
  • Review your family medical history with your student.
  • Ensure your student has their own insurance card (or a copy/picture of yours) to bring to their appointment.
  • Help your student find their current immunization record.
  • Brainstorm with your student any questions they should consider asking their doctor.
  • Encourage your student to be open and honest about all aspects of their health.

Will the results of the physical be shared with me?
This information is confidential and cannot be shared with you unless your student gives us their written permission. For questions about this policy, call us at 402.472.5000.
