After months of giddy anticipation about your student’s return home, the wait is finally over. Yet, you may not have anticipated the challenges that came with their return (i.e. changes in habits, desire to see friends rather than family and no need for a curfew).

To help you navigate these challenges, the professionals at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) have the following tips:

1. Ease into it. As excited as you are to have them home and to find out about their journey in school, take your time.

2. Be patient; remember you are reconnecting with each other. They have changed since they left your home.

3. Be willing to negotiate. Discuss with them what is reasonable in terms of chores, curfews and roles. Work together to reach a shared decision.

4. Do not over-schedule your holiday break. You both need time without the other.

5. Understand that your student will need time to relax and recharge.

Enjoy your holidays and remember that CAPS is here to support your student.
