Many students are focused on their classes for the semester - what they have going on right now. Many parents, on the other hand, are focused on helping their students successfully graduate and get a job. It’s important to do well during the semester, but it is also important to plan for the future. You can help by encouraging your student to:
*Meet with his or her advisor to plan a schedule of classes for each semester (this may be adjusted throughout the student’s college career, but you need to start with an overall plan). It is helpful for students to at least know who their advisor is – so encourage them to stop by to say “hello.”
*Schedule an appointment with UNL Career Services (http://www.unl.edu/careers/get-know-career-services) to develop a current resume and to learn more about possible future careers. Seeing what current jobs are being filled can help students determine what careers they may be interested in as well. Résumés may also be used to get a temporary job while in school, to provide information to awards committees, and to help you keep track of experiences that could help you get your dream job in the future.
*Investigate the Education Abroad Program (http://educationabroad.unl.edu) located at 420 University Terrace. Staff can tell students about the many opportunities available and also give you scholarship information.
*Don’t forget about the UCARE (Experience and Research Opportunity for Students). Make sure to read more about this excellent program in this issue of the UNL Parents Newsletter.
*Visit the Student Involvement Office (200 Nebraska Union) or the Center for Civic Engagement (222 Nebraska Union) to explore different involvement activities. Participation in these programs can help students work with new people, learn from actual experience and even have fun.
