When young people leave home to go to college, there are many issues that may arise for those college students. One common concern is to see an increase in alcohol or marijuana use that can begin to affect a student’s education. In response to this concern, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) of the University Health Center significantly increased their alcohol/drug abuse services to students in 2013. Duke Engel, a Licensed Alcohol/Drug Counselor and Licensed Mental Health Professional with over 40 years experience joined the CAPS staff to begin providing alcohol/drug counseling to students. His background in program development of treatment programs specifically for adolescents and young people, alcohol and drug education, and many years of experience counseling young people have created a unique opportunity for improving alcohol/drug services at UNL. Services now provided to students include alcohol/drug evaluations and BASICS (a 2 session alcohol education program specifically designed for college students). 2013 also saw the introduction of an alcohol/drug support group for students that wanted to make changes in their drinking or drug use. In CAPS, we are committed to providing the foundation for success in all areas of our students’ lives. Consistent with this mission, Duke is available to talk to parents that are concerned about their son’s or daughter’s alcohol/drug use at 402-805-2156.
