Meeting with an Academic Advisor/Preparing for Registration

Students use MyPLAN to identify and make appointments with their advisor (listed under “My Success Network”). For the appointment to be productive, encourage your student to plan in advance!

*Some advisors may be booked for a week or longer, especially during busy times. Encourage your student to schedule an appointment early. During priority registration some advising units do walk-in advising only. Your student can email his/her advisor to find the best way to meet.

*Encourage your student to develop a list of questions they want to ask. Do they need help finding services on campus? Are they considering a minor? Education abroad? Coming to the appointment prepared will ensure your student gets all of the information they need. Advisors can easily get students connected with academic support, career services, counseling/health services, involvement opportunities…your student just needs to ask!

*Before the appointment your student should review the undergraduate bulletin (available online at: http://bulletin.unl.edu/undergraduate/). The undergraduate bulletin will show their major/degree requirements, a sample four-year graduation plan, and course descriptions.

*Students should also review their degree audit (available under “Records” in MyRED). They can see on the degree audit if any transfer work or AP/IB credit they believe they have earned has been received by UNL and applied to their degree. They can also see where their current classes are fitting into their graduation requirements and what requirements they still have left.

All UNL students register during “Priority Registration.” Priority registration will be held from Monday, October 27 – Tuesday, November 11. Students will be assigned a specific date and time to register during that time period. The dates are assigned by class level so that seniors register before juniors; juniors register before sophomores, etc. Students can find their specific day and time to register on MyRED.

Students will register on their own at their assigned priority registration time. They do not have to come to an advising office to register, but they should speak with their advisor before their registration time to make certain they are prepared to register at the earliest possible time. Some students wait until after priority registration to meet with their advisor and do not register until that time. This is a mistake! They should use the bulletin and degree audit and email their advisor with questions so they can get into the classes they need.

All fines and holds must be cleared before a student can register. If your student has a hold, it will be listed on their MyRED page.

Students can fill their shopping cart before their appointment time, but the shopping cart does not hold a seat. Students can go to their shopping cart to register for courses as soon as they are able to, but all students should have back-up courses in mind in case their first choice courses fill before they can register.

If your student has any questions about the registration process, please have them contact their advisor – we care about each student’s success!
