Applying for Scholarships for Continuing Students

It is not too early for your student to begin the search for scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year. Finding information about applying for various scholarship opportunities starts at the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid website, http://www.financialaid.unl.edu.

Students who have been enrolled at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in the fall semester of 2014 are eligible to complete the Scholarship Application for Current Undergraduate Students. This application will be available on the MyRED student portal approximately November 15. The deadline is February 1, 2015. By completing the application, students will be in the pool of applicants for college, departmental, and University of Nebraska Foundation scholarships.

Some scholarships that are offered by colleges and departments, however, require a specific application. Students should check with the deans and department chairs of their colleges and departments to see if they might qualify for these opportunities.

For students that are considering studying abroad, the University offers some study abroad-specific awards, such as the Global Gateway Education Abroad Scholarship and others that have been established for this purpose. Students apply for these scholarships through the Education Abroad Office’s MyWorld Basic Scholarship Application. Some departmental awards are also available specifically for studying abroad. The MyWorld Basic Scholarship Application has deadlines of October 1 for spring and February 1 for summer and fall programs.

The University, in an effort to encourage students to study abroad, has also made a commitment to supporting students in applying for national study abroad scholarships, such as the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship. Students should contact the Education Abroad Office in Love Library South Room 127 for information regarding the application process for both University and national scholarships for studying abroad.

The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid staff encourages students to pursue external scholarships through entities such as local community foundations and national programs. Civic organizations, religious organizations, and employers (both student and parent) are also good sources to investigate for potential scholarship funding.

Not all scholarships go to students with off-the-charts ACT scores or grade point averages. Through searching diligently and applying in a timely manner, many students have successfully funded a large part of their University expenses with scholarships.
