Every year the beginning of the fall semester brings new life to campus. While the summer allows us to work at a slower pace and "catch our breath", by the beginning of the August we are ready for the students to return. The Marching Band practicing about a week before classes start and the arrival of freshmen women going through sorority rush week are sure signals that summer is over.

We are looking forward to another exciting year. We expect enrollment to be up again this year. Construction has begun on the new College of Business Administration (CBA) building, we have opened the new Campus Recreation building on East Campus, and we are planning a new dining facility to serve the students in the Knoll Hall and University Suites quadrant.

The arrival of our new president, President Hank Bounds, has brought new energy to campus. His vision for a bigger and better University system has encouraged us to reach for the sky. His interest in students is evident and drives many of his goals.

Other exciting things are occurring this year. The University Health Center's management will transfer to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, construction will begin on a new residence hall on East Campus and the East Campus Union will be remodeled.

Chancellor Perlman has announced that this will be his last year as Chancellor. A search committee has been established to help the President find the new Chancellor for UNL. Chancellor Perlman has served the University admirably for the last fourteen years and will be sorely missed. His successor will have very big shoes to fill.

Lastly, some thoughts for you as parents to consider. While the students are happy with their new independence, they will miss you. Check with them every so often and let them know you miss them. Know that they will make mistakes, and that's OK. They need your support as they tackle new subjects or new experiences. Encourage them to get involved in University activities, such as student government or different clubs. Generally, students who become true members of the University community are more successful. You have given them wings, now let them fly.

We are delighted that your sons and daughters are attending UNL and look forward to another great year.
